NextSense Smartbuds

Most sleep wearables just track. Smartbuds actually deepen your sleep. Using clinical-grade EEG sensors, they read your brainwaves in real time and play gentle sound pulses tuned to boost your slow waves — the deepest, most restorative stage of sleep. Built ultra-comfortable for all-night wear, even for side sleepers.

How do Smartbuds work?
Smartbuds use clinical-grade EEG sensors to read your brainwaves in real time. As you move through sleep stages, the earbuds deliver gentle, personalized sound pulses that deepen your most restorative sleep.
Who makes Smartbuds?
Smartbuds are made by NextSense, founded in 2020 by the team behind Google Health's sleep research. Founder and CEO Jonathan Berent was a Director at Google X (Alphabet's moonshot lab) before launching NextSense to bring clinical-grade EEG technology out of the sleep lab and into a product you can wear every night. Based in Mountain View, California, our team includes neuroscientists, engineers, and clinicians dedicated to making brain health accessible.
What's in the box?
Smartbuds + wireless charging case, all 3 sizes of ear tips and wings, USB-C charging cable, and access to the NextSense companion app. Requires iPhone 12 or newer running iOS 17+.
How are Smartbuds different from AirPods?
Unlike regular earbuds, Smartbuds are built to be slept in all night and use clinical-grade EEG brainwave sensing to track your sleep stages in real time. They're smaller, softer, and fit flat against your ear so they don't dig in when you're on your side. AirPods play music. Smartbuds work with your brain to deepen your sleep.
Is my brain data private?
Yes. We never sell or share your data, and sharing is off by default. Everything is encrypted and stored securely. We link your data to your account to run the app and support you. For research, your name and personal details are removed so researchers can't see who you are. You can delete your data anytime from within the app.
What if they don't work for me?
Try Smartbuds for 30 nights. If they don't improve your sleep, send them back for a full refund, no questions asked. We also include a 1-year warranty on all hardware.
Are Smartbuds comfortable for side sleepers?
Yes. Smartbuds are engineered specifically for sleep, significantly smaller and lower-profile than standard wireless earbuds, with soft, flexible ear tips and stabilizing wings designed to stay comfortable against a pillow all night. Three tip and wing sizes are included so you can dial in a secure, pressure-free fit.

Brain Responsive Sleep Technology

Smart sensing, all night

Your Smartbuds combine brain sensing with science-backed sounds to help you rest better. Let’s dive into how it works.

Your body has a rhythm, Smartbuds tune in

Your brain generates bursts of electrical activity—called brain waves—that change shape as you progress deeper into sleep.

Detecting your sleep

As you fall asleep, Smartbuds track these shifts with in-ear EEG sensors.

Your most restorative sleep is powered by slow waves

These deep, low-frequency waves appear when your brain enters recovery mode, supporting memory, cellular repair, and other critical processes.

Sound waves that boost your slow waves

Smartbuds play gentle pink noise pulses that sync with your brain’s natural rhythms, deepening slow waves for better sleep quality.

EEG & Brain data

What is EEG and why does it matter?

EEG (electroencephalography) measures electrical activity in the brain. It's the gold standard for sleep science, allowing Smartbuds to detect sleep stages and optimize audio in real time—unlike wrist trackers that only infer sleep from movement or heart rate.

Can Smartbuds read my thoughts?

No. EEG detects patterns like sleep depth or transitions—not thoughts, memories, or emotions. Your mental privacy is deeply respected.

Is my brain data private?

Yes. We never sell or share your data. Data sharing is off by default, and all information is encrypted, stored securely, and anonymized before leaving your device. You can delete your data anytime from within the app.

What is slow-wave sleep?

Slow-wave sleep, also called deep sleep, is the most restorative stage of sleep. It's when your brain produces slow, high-amplitude delta waves. This stage is essential for waking up refreshed.

Sounds

Can sound hurt my sleep?

It can—if it's the wrong kind. Jarring, unpredictable, or overly stimulating audio can disrupt your rest. That's why Smartbuds use gentle soundscapes specifically designed to support healthy sleep. When personalized and timed right, sound can actually enhance your sleep rather than interrupt it.

What is slow-wave enhancement?

Slow-wave enhancement is a technique that uses precisely timed sound (soft pink noise) to nudge your brain waves into their most restorative rhythm. This the enhances the quality of your sleep without waking you up.

Care & Cleaning

How do I clean my earbuds and sleeves?

Use a cloth dampened with bottled water to gently clean the surface. Let everything dry completely before using again. Clean weekly for best performance.

How do I replace my wings and/or tips?

Smartbuds' wings and tips require regular replacement to continue collecting brain data. Always handle them gently and even if you're only swapping out wings, you’ll need to take the tip off first.

Step 1: Remove the tip. Hold the earbud firmly in one hand. With the other hand, pinch the silicone tip near its base and pull it straight off using a slow, steady motion. Don’t twist or yank—these components are delicate and house important sensors.

Step 2: Remove the wing. Gently peel the wing away from the body of the earbud, starting at one edge and working around. It should come off with light, even pressure—no need to force it.

Step 3: Attach the new wing. Align the new wing so that the cutout fits neatly around the base of the earbud. Stretch the wing gently into place and press it down so it sits flush and snug against the earbud.

Step 4: Attach the new tip. Align the new tip with the nozzle of the earbud. Press it on firmly until it feels secure—you may hear or feel a soft click when it’s in place.

Are Smartbuds waterproof?

No. Avoid rain, heavy sweat, and any moisture exposure. Do not submerge them in water or wear them in the shower.

Apps & Features

What is sleep routine?

Your sleep routine is the window when you aim to be asleep—from your usual bedtime to your usual wake-up time. Setting it helps us customize your experience, like reminding you to charge your Smartbuds before bed. It doesn’t set an alarm or prevent you from starting a sleep session at a different time. Many users also find it helpful for setting sleep goals and keeping a consistent sleep schedule.
