Sleep technology, finally simple enough to wear every night.
For decades, measuring brain activity meant a sleep lab — wires glued to your scalp, a technician watching screens overnight, and a clinical bill at the end. Useful for medicine, but impossible to bring home. Sleep trackers tried to bridge that gap with wrist data and movement guesses, but they can't actually see your brain. They estimate.
NextSense Smartbuds put real EEG sensors right where the brain is closest to the skin — inside your ear. The result is the same kind of brain signal a sleep clinic measures, in a device you can wear to bed without thinking about it. No gel, no wires, no setup. Just sleep.
In published clinical research, the same ear-EEG sensors used in Smartbuds detected 86.4% of brain events picked up by full hospital EEG — the medical gold standard.
Lab-grade sensors. Earbud-sized.
Your brain leads. The sound follows.
Most sleep gadgets collect data while you sleep and show you a score in the morning. Smartbuds are different — they respond to your brain in real time, gently guiding it toward deeper, more restorative sleep as you drift off.
Read
Six tiny sensors inside the earbuds quietly track your brain activity, the same way doctors monitor sleep in a clinic — but without wires or setup.
Understand
Smartbuds know what stage of sleep you're in — light, deep, dreaming, or waking — with the same accuracy a sleep doctor would measure.
Respond
When you enter deep sleep, gentle audio pulses play — timed to your brainwaves — to help your body get more of the recovery sleep you actually need. The technique is well-studied and used in published sleep research.
Adapt
As your sleep changes through the night, so does the audio. Quiet when you're deep. Subtle nudges if you're surfacing. Off entirely when you wake up.
Across 106 nights of testing, Smartbuds increased deep sleep — the kind of sleep most linked to physical recovery and a sharper mind the next day.
Real sleep technology, designed to actually be worn.
Sleep affects everything — memory, mood, immune health, weight, heart health, even how you show up for your family the next day. But until now, the technology that could actually measure and improve sleep was locked inside hospitals and research labs.
Smartbuds change that. The same kind of brain-signal monitoring that sleep doctors use is now available in a device the size of a regular earbud — comfortable enough to sleep in every night, accurate enough to be used in clinical research.
Smartbuds were developed inside Alphabet's X — the moonshot lab at Google — before spinning out as NextSense in 2020. The team includes neuroscientists, sleep researchers, and clinicians, and the technology is already being used in published peer-reviewed studies on sleep and brain health.

FAQs
-
SmartBuds are designed specifically for sleep. The soft silicone ear tips come in multiple sizes, and the low-profile design means side sleepers can wear them comfortably all night. Most users forget they're wearing them within minutes.
-
Clinical-grade sensors in the earbuds read your brainwaves in real time. When SmartBuds detect you're entering deep sleep, they deliver precisely timed pink noise pulses that sync with your slow brain waves, naturally extending the time you spend in the most restorative sleep stages.
-
Yes. SmartBuds use passive, non-invasive EEG monitoring and gentle audio stimulation. The technology is backed by over 10 years of neuroscience research and has been validated in peer-reviewed clinical studies. There are no known side effects from nightly use.
-
Yes, and it's what keeps your sleep data accurate. SmartBuds' wings and tips are made from Tecticoat®, a clinical-grade conductive material that makes EEG sensing possible. As they naturally wear down, signal quality drops. Your first order includes a Universal Fit Kit with all three sizes (S, M, L) so you can find your fit before committing to a size. After that, replacement is recommended monthly — the NextSense app will notify you when it's time.
Replacements are purchased individually. To replace: remove the tip first by pulling it straight off at the base, then gently peel the wing away from one edge. Attach the new wing by aligning the cutout and pressing it flush, then press the new tip onto the nozzle until it clicks into place. -
SmartBuds last up to 10 hours on a single charge with sleep tracking and audio active. The charging case holds multiple additional charges, so you'll always have enough power for a full night's sleep.
-
Absolutely. SmartBuds deliver premium audio quality with active noise cancellation for music, calls, and podcasts during the day. They're built to be your everyday earbuds that happen to also transform your sleep at night.
